Details

Aramid Paper is a sophisticated, non-woven sheet material made from para-aramid, meta-aramid fibers, or their blends, using a specialized papermaking process from meta-aramid fibers. Aramid paper is not a traditional paper made from cellulose, but an engineered composite structure that combines the thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of aramid polymers in a thin, flexible, and uniform sheet format.

It’s processed via conventional paper machines with a homogeneous, foam-free slurry, ensuring good sheet formation. It’s widely used for electrical insulation and structural honeycomb applications.

What are the advantages or benefits of aramid paper?

Reliability at High Temperatures: Enables downsizing of electrical equipment by allowing higher operating temperatures, improving power-to-weight ratios.

Fail-Safe Performance: Under extreme overload, it carbonizes to a rigid, electrically insulating structure, preventing catastrophic failure.

Lightweight Alternative: Replaces heavier and more brittle traditional insulations like mica/glass laminates or asbestos paper.

Consistency & Purity: Manufactured to tight tolerances with no contaminants, critical for aerospace and high-voltage applications.

Multifunctional Simplicity: A single material provides mechanical support, electrical isolation, and thermal endurance, simplifying design and assembly.

Excellent Crease Retention: Can be folded and will hold the crease, essential for fabricating precise insulation shapes like slot liners.

What applications are aramid paper used for?

Aramid paper is widely used in the following areas:

Electrical Insulation (The Core Market):

oMotor & Generator Insulation: Slot liners, phase separators, wedges, and coil wraps in traction motors (EVs, trains), HV generators, and industrial motors.

oTransformer Insulation: Layer and barrier insulation in dry-type and oil-filled transformers.

oWire & Cable Wrapping: Insulation for high-temperature wiring, harnesses, and fire-safe cables.

oElectronic Substrates: Flexible printed circuit boards (PCBs) for high-temperature or high-frequency applications.

Aerospace & Transportation:

oHoneycomb Core Material: The dominant use. Aramid paper is impregnated with phenolic resin and expanded into a hexagonal honeycomb structure. Used in aircraft randoms, fairings, flooring, and interior panels. Offers exceptional strength-to-weight and crush resistance.

oFirewall and Thermal Barriers: Sheets and composites used to isolate engine heat.

Industrial & Thermal Management:

oGaskets & Seals: For high-temperature flanges, ovens, and engines. Often impregnated with PTFE or silicone.

oAcoustic & Thermal Insulation: In appliances, industrial equipment, and automotive.

oHeater & Iron Insulation: As a barrier and insulating layer in household and industrial heating elements.

Specialty Composites: Used as a prepreg or surface veil to improve impact resistance and fire performance of composite laminates.

How to store and handle aramid paper?

For purpose of ensuring safety, quality and performance, the aramid products should be stored properly. Please follow the instruction below:

Environment: 15–35°C, 35–65% relative humidity; clean, dry, well-ventilated

Handling: Keep original packaging intact until use; avoid sharp objects, strong alkalis, direct sunlight

Shelf life: 24 months from production date (when stored as recommended)

FAQ

Question 1: Is "Aramid Paper" the same as "Nomex® Paper"?

A: Nomex® is a DuPont brand name for its meta-aramid paper. It is the original and most well-known product. "Aramid paper" is the generic term. Always contact us for technical data to balance its equivalence, as properties can vary slightly.

Question 2: Can aramid paper be used in oil-filled transformers?

A: Yes, it is widely used. It is compatible with and stable in mineral oil, silicone oil, and ester-based transformer fluids. Its high temperature rating and hydrolytic stability make it superior to cellulose paper in demanding applications.

Question 3: How do you cut, punch, or fabricate aramid paper?

A: It is highly fabricable.

* Die Cutting: Standard clicker dies or steel rule dies work well.

* Punching: Use sharp, hardened steel punches and dies.

* Kiss Cutting: Effective for creating precise shapes without cutting through backing paper.

* Laser Cutting: CO2 lasers work very effectively, producing a clean, carbonized edge. Ensure proper ventilation.

* Ultrasonic Cutting: Excellent for sealing edges while cutting.

Question 4: Why is aramid paper so expensive compared to cellulose paper?

A: Cost is driven by:

1. Raw Material: High-performance aramid polymer is costly to synthesize.

2. Complex Process: The wet-laid process with fibrids is specialized and capital-intensive.

3. Performance Value: It is not a commodity but an engineering material that enables device miniaturization, weight reduction, and extreme reliability, justifying its cost in critical applications.

Question 5: Is aramid paper safe to handle?

A: Generally very safe. It is non-irritating and releases no hazardous volatiles during normal use. However, dust generated during machining (sanding, heavy cutting) should be controlled via ventilation or dust collection, as with any fine particulate. It is not classified as a carcinogen.
