Details

High Silica Fiberglass Tape is a high-performance refractory material woven from continuous amorphous high silica fiberglass yarns with a SiO₂ content of ≥96%. It is a unidirectional or woven tape structure, typically ranging from 6mm to 200mm in width, produced by weaving, knitting, or needling high silica yarns. The most common construction is a plain weave or a leno weave (for edge integrity).

Through precision weaving and advanced pre-shrinking treatment, the high silica tape achieves exceptional dimensional stability, with shrinkage ≤3% at maximum service temperatures. It combines superior high-temperature resistance, mechanical strength, and insulation properties, making it a reliable choice for extreme thermal environments across industries. The tape is non-toxic, low-smoke, and chemically stable, ensuring safe and long-lasting performance.

How many types of high silica fiberglass tape are there?

Classification is based on construction, coating, and edge treatment.

1. By Construction:

-Woven Tape (Plain Weave): The standard. Yarns interlaced at 90 degrees. Offers balanced properties, good stability, and clean edges. Most common for general wrapping and insulation.

-Woven Tape (Leno Weave): Warp yarns are paired and twisted around the weft yarns. Creates an extremely stable, fray-resistant edge. Essential for applications where tape will be cut to length on-site or subjected to high abrasion.

-Knitted/Sleeving Tape: A tubular knit that can be flattened into a tape. Highly flexible and stretchable, excellent for wrapping irregular shapes and providing a protective sleeve.

-Impregnated Tape: Tape saturated with colloidal silica, alumina, or other inorganic binders to increase cohesion, reduce porosity, and enhance abrasion resistance for use in rigidized systems.

2. By Coating/Treatment:

-Uncoated (Calcined): Pure high silica, heat-cleaned to remove organic sizings. Maximum temperature capability (>1100°C). Has a slightly "hairy" surface.

-Silicone Rubber Coated: Coated on one or both sides with high-temperature silicone (HTV or RTV). Provides excellent abrasion resistance, environmental sealing, and improved handleability. Limits continuous use to the silicone's rating (~200-250°C), though the silica core survives much higher short-term exposure.

-Vermiculite or Graphite Coated: For specialized sealing applications in aerospace and defense to enhance ablative or sealing characteristics.

3. By Edge Finish:

-Heat-Cut Edges: Edges are thermally cut and sealed to prevent fraying. Clean and precise.

-Selvage Edges (Woven): The natural, tightly woven edge of the fabric from which the tape is slit. Can be less fray-resistant than leno weave or heat-cut.

-Overlocked/Serged Edges: A secondary textile stitch (using silica or glass thread) to bind the edges. Rare, used for very heavy-duty applications.

What are the advantages or benefits of high silica tape?

-Rapid Installation: Eliminates the need to cut fabric strips on-site, saving labor and reducing material waste. Pre-packaged, consistent widths.

-Conformability & Seal Creation: Ideal for creating custom gaskets, wrapping irregular shapes (valves, flanges, tees), and sealing gaps in insulation blankets.

-High-Temperature Fastening: Can be used to tie and secure other high-temperature insulation materials (e.g., ceramic fiber modules, blankets) in place, replacing metal wires that can create thermal shorts.

-Electrical Isolation in Harsh Environments: Provides a durable, heat-resistant layer for insulating electrical components, harnesses, and thermocouples in hot zones.

-Ablative Layer Protection: In aerospace, used to wrap and protect underlying structures in areas exposed to exhaust plumes or aerodynamic heating.

-Clean Burn-Out: Uncoated tapes with organic sizings will burn out cleanly, leaving a pure silica structure—useful in lost-material processes.

What applications are high silica tapes used for?

The tape is widely used in high-temperature industrial scenarios, including:

1.Thermal Insulation: Wrapping for pipes, hoses, valves, and ducts in power plants, refineries, and chemical facilities.

2.Welding Protection: Isolation barriers for welding operations to prevent heat damage to surrounding components.

3.Metallurgy & Foundry: Molten metal splash protection, furnace door seals, and ladle insulation.

4.Automotive: Aftermarket exhaust system wraps, engine bay heat shields, and high-temperature gaskets.

5.Electronics & Electrical: Insulation for high-temperature cables, transformers, and heating elements.

6.Aerospace & Defense: Thermal protection for aircraft engines, rocket components, and military equipment.

7.Building & Construction: Fireproof seals for doors, windows, and ventilation ducts; refractory linings.

8.Other: High-temperature gaskets, sealing strips, and protective covers for industrial machinery.

How to store and handle high silica fiberglass tape properly?

Unless otherwise specified, it is advised to keep high silica fiberglass tapes according to the following guidelines:

1.Environmental Conditions: Store in a cool, clean, and dry area with temperature 15–35℃ and relative humidity 35–65%.

2.Packaging Protection: Keep the tape in its original moisture-proof packaging (kraft paper + PE film) until use. Avoid opening packages prematurely to prevent moisture absorption or contamination.

3.Avoid Hazards: Protect from rain, direct sunlight, and corrosive substances (acids, alkalis, solvents).

4.Shelf Life: No defined shelf life when stored properly. Retest for performance after 3 years from the production date to ensure optimal functionality.

5.Handling Tips: Use clean, dry tools when cutting or installing. Avoid sharp objects that may damage the tape’s structure.

FAQ

Question 1: What are the standard roll lengths of high silica tapes?

A: Regular specifications are 30m/roll and 50m/roll. Custom lengths (e.g., 100m/roll) are available upon request.

Question 2: Do you offer Ladder/Drop Warp silica tape?

A: Yes. We can produce high silica tape with a ladder or drop warp pattern to meet specialized application needs.

Question 3: Can I get samples of silica tapes for testing?

A: Yes. Free samples (up to 1m in length) are provided for quality verification.

Question 4: When should I choose a Leno Weave over a Plain Weave tape?

A: Choose Leno Weave if:

* The tape will be cut to length in the field.

* The application involves high abrasion against the tape edges.

* Fray resistance is critical to prevent contamination (e.g., in aerospace or cleanroom-adjacent applications).

Choose Plain Weave for general-purpose wrapping where cost is a factor and the tape will be used in pre-cut lengths or the entire roll.

Question 5: Can High Silica Tape be used as a direct replacement for fiberglass tape?

A: Yes, but it is a performance upgrade, not a direct cost-equivalent substitute. Use High Silica Tape when the operating temperature exceeds 600°C, where fiberglass would melt and fail. For temperatures below 600°C, fiberglass tape is more cost-effective. High silica also offers better thermal shock resistance.

Question 6: Can the silica tape be washed or reused?

A: Uncoated silica tape can be gently blown with clean, dry air to remove surface dust. It is generally not washable with water or solvents. Silicone-coated high silica tape can sometimes be wiped clean. Reusability depends on the application; if it has been exposed to extreme temperatures, compression, or contamination, its performance will be degraded, and replacement is recommended.
