Details

High Silica Fiberglass Rope

High Silica Fiberglass Rope is a high-performance refractory material crafted from continuous air-blown high silica fiberglass yarns with a SiO₂ content of ≥96%. It’s designed for continuous service at 900–1100°C (1652–2012°F) and stands out for being non-toxic, eco-friendly, and exceptionally temperature-resistant. It represents the highest-strength, largest-diameter form of silica textile products, designed for heavy-duty sealing, tying, packing, and structural applications where extreme heat resistance combined with mechanical integrity is paramount.

We also offer specialized High Silica Fiberglass Wicks, engineered for electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes), hair dryers, and electric ovens—featuring high oil absorption, fast oil conduction, odorlessness, and reliable high-temperature stability.

Both the rope and wick undergo precision processing (twisting or braiding) to ensure uniform thickness, smooth surfaces, and long-lasting performance in harsh thermal or corrosive environments.

How many types of high silica fiberglass ropes are there?

Classification is based on construction and core material.

1. By Construction Method:

-Braided Rope (Most Common):

**Square Braid (Plaited): 8, 12, or 16 carriers interlace in a flat, woven pattern. Very dense, strong, and resistant to twisting/unraveling. Excellent for compression packing.

**Hollow Braid: Tubular braid that collapses flat under pressure. Highly flexible and conformable.

-Twisted/Laid Rope: Multiple yarns twisted into strands, then strands twisted together in the opposite direction (like traditional hemp rope). Good strength but can kink and untwist under load.

-Knitted Rope: Produced on a circular knitting machine. Very flexible and compressible with high loft, but lower tensile strength. Ideal for lightweight insulation and filling.

2. By Core Composition:

-Solid Braid (No Separate Core): The entire cross-section is braided silica. Uniform properties throughout.

-Core-Reinforced Rope:

**Fiberglass Core: Increases tensile strength and reduces cost while maintaining high-temperature capability (limited by glass core temp ~600°C).

**Inconel Wire Core or Overbraid: Adds exceptional tensile strength, prevents extrusion under high pressure, and improves thermal conductivity for heat dissipation.

**Graphite Filament Core: Enhances lubricity and sealing in valve stem packing applications.

What are the advantages and benefits of high silica fiberglass ropes?

-Heavy-Duty Sealing: Capable of sealing large, irregular gaps in furnace doors, kilns, and expansion joints where flat gaskets are impractical.

-Structural Integrity at Temperature: Can secure refractory linings, insulation modules, and other components in place, replacing metal retainers that conduct heat.

-Custom Packing On-Site: Can be layered, woven, or folded to create custom packing shapes for unique flange geometries or repairs.

-Long Service Life: Resists degradation from thermal cycling, chemical exposure, and mechanical abrasion better than many ceramic fiber products.

-Emergency Repairs: Can be used for temporary sealing and repairs in high-temperature systems without requiring a shutdown to cool completely.

-Versatile Fastening: Functions as high-temperature lashing, tying, and securing material for rigging in hot zones.

What applications are high silica fiberglass rope and wicks used for?

High Silica Fiberglass Rope

1.Industrial Insulation & Sealing: High-temperature gaskets, furnace door seals, expansion joints, and thermal coupling insulation.

2.Metallurgy & Foundry: Molten metal handling equipment, kiln linings, and welding protection.

3.Aerospace & Defense: Thermal insulation for aircraft engines, rocket components, and military hardware.

4.Chemical & Petrochemical: Corrosion-resistant seals for pipelines, reactors, and valves.

5.Electrical & Power: Insulation for high-temperature cables, transformers, and heating elements.

6.Renewable Energy: Thermal protection for solar panel components and wind turbine wiring.

High Silica Fiberglass Wick

1.E-Cigarettes: Rebuildable atomizers (RDA/RTA) and disposable e-cigarettes—ensures smooth vapor production.

2.Household Appliances: Hair dryers (heat-resistant wicks), electric ovens (insulation and heating element wicks).

3.Small Electronics: Portable heaters, humidifiers, and other devices requiring oil conduction or heat resistance.

How to store and handle high silica ropes?

1.Environmental Conditions: Store in a cool, clean, dry area (15–35℃, relative humidity 35–65%). Avoid “cold” (corrected for industry consistency).

2.Packaging Protection: Keep in original moisture-proof packaging until use. Do not open prematurely to prevent moisture absorption or contamination.

3.Avoid Hazards: Protect from rain, direct sunlight, and corrosive substances (acids, alkalis, solvents).

4.Shelf Life: No defined shelf life when stored properly. Retest for performance after 3 years from production date.

5.Handling Tips: Use clean, dry tools when cutting or installing. Avoid excessive pulling to prevent fraying (especially for wicks).

FAQ

Question 1: How do I select the correct diameter of high silica ropes for a sealing groove?

A: The rule of thumb is: Rope Diameter = (Groove Width) x 1.3. For a 10mm wide groove, use a 13mm diameter rope. This ensures about 30% compression when the flange is tightened, creating an effective seal.

Question 2: Can high silica rope be used as a replacement for asbestos rope?

A: Yes, high silica rope is the premier high-performance, non-carcinogenic replacement. It matches or exceeds asbestos in temperature resistance and sealing capability. High silica rope is more flexible and easier to handle than asbestos rope. In many retrofit applications, it is a direct drop-in replacement.

Question 3: What is the difference between "braided" and "twisted" silica rope, and which is better for sealing?

A: Braided rope is more dimensionally stable, doesn't kink, has higher tensile strength, and compresses more uniformly, making it far superior for sealing applications. Twisted rope is cheaper and can untwist under load, making it suitable only for light-duty tying or insulation.

Question 4: How do I join two ends of the silica rope?

A: For sealing applications, butt the ends together cleanly—do not overlap. Overlapping creates a hard spot and a leak path. For structural tying, use an appropriate knot (square knot for joining two ends). For a permanent, seamless joint, the ends can be needle-punched together with additional silica yarn or secured with high-temperature wire.

Question 5: What is the maximum pressure high silica rope can seal?

A: Sealing pressure depends on the silica rope density, reinforcement, and installation. Unreinforced silica rope can seal up to ~5-10 psi in a proper groove. Inconel-reinforced rope in a confined gland can handle 50-150 psi or more. For higher pressures, a laminated sheet gasket or molded product is more appropriate.
